Choosing between Linux hosting and Windows hosting isn't quite as complicated as it seems at first. zConnect offers hosting on both the Windows platform and the Linux operating system. Below you'll find a comparison of the two options, along with some supporting information that will help you decide what's best for you.
Windows or Linux?
Generally speaking, if you're not sure, then the answer is probably Linux. Now, that's a glib answer to a question that's actually a bit
more involved, but it's probably not too far off the mark. Both platforms are excellent for hosting websites, so you're not likely to make
a "bad" decision. But each has strengths and weaknesses, and there are some scenarios which would require one or the other.
If I'm running Windows on my computer, don't I have to use Windows hosting?
Nope. There's no requirement that you host your site on Windows simply because you're running a Windows-based computer to manage it.
It's very easy to manage a Linux-hosted site from a Windows computer; we do it all the time. The tools that you'll use to update
and publish your site don't really care whether the site is hosted on Windows or Linux, so don't feel like you have to choose
Windows just because you're running Windows.
What strengths does the Linux platform offer?
Linux is the platform that the vast majority of websites run on. This is primarily because the software that powers these websites (it's called
"Apache") was originally developed to run on Linux (although it's available on Windows, too). Linux tends to be less expensive because the
underlying software is what's known as "open source" and doesn't generally carry the same sorts of licensing fees that Windows does. Linux is also
the platform that hosts the MySQL database server, which may be important if you're planning on loading a MySQL-based application.

What's the Windows platform good at?
Lots of larger businesses host on the Windows platform (think Priceline.com and Expedia for starters). The Windows web server (called Internet
Information Services or IIS) includes a very powerful scripting language called Active Server Pages (ASP), as well as excellent integration
with Microsoft's database server - SQL Server. If you're building an ASP application, you
essentially have no choice but to host on Windows.
